TALK
With some exceptions, the endeavour of scientists and artists have been historically pursued in different environments. In recent years an intersection between the two cultures – science and art – became increasingly common. As part of this trend, research laboratories started to be used by artists as studios for art production. There are, however, significant differences between the approach of artists and scientists when working in the laboratory. The differences and similarities between art and science, two activities based on creativity, will be discussed.

SPEAKER
Marta de Menezes (born 1975) is a Portuguese artist, with a Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Lisbon and a MSt from the University of Oxford. De Menezes is director of Cultivamos Cultura, the leading institution devoted to experimental art in Portugal and Ectopia, dedicated to facilitate the collaborative work between artists and scientists. Marta de Menezes has worked in the intersection of art and biology since the late 90s, in the UK, Australia, the Netherlands, and Portugal, exploring the conceptual and aesthetic opportunities offered by biological sciences for visual representation in the arts.
Her work has been widely exhibited in major venues in all continents, presented in most anthologies devoted to bioart, discussed in doctoral dissertations, and considered an example of research in the visual arts.

subnetTALK
Insight and dialogue in the field of tension: art, research, material.

subnetTALK is an open dialogue format. subnet invites artists and researchers to give an impulse on topics in the field of tension between art, material and research. This impulse is the basis for the following dialogue. Both impulse and dialogue will be recorded and broadcast by FS1. Rüdiger Wassibauer moderates the dialogue.

subnetTALK is a cooperation between the Center for Human Computer Interaction (University of Salzburg) and subnet.
