it’s our pleasure to welcome Servando Barreiro to our subnetAIR program 2026!
As every year, a mixture of local and international artistic positions has been sought out. The selected project proposals and persons are characterised by ambitious objectives and thematic relevance.

The jury’s decision was to give one subnetAIR slot to Servando Barreiro because „Musician and sound artist, Servando Barreiro explores and illustrates how neurodiverse individuals perceive and interact with the world in a different way. The project’s sensitivity to diverse cognitive experiences offers an important and timely contribution to broader conversations about accessibility, representation, and the politics of perception. Furthermore, the jury emphasizes the critical stance on emerging technologies and a musical production system based on open source software and recognizes a coherent and poetic audiovisual installation/sculpture, rooted in an artistic practice of exploration and iteration.“

Servando Barreiro on his project:
My art is usually presented as an audiovisual interactive installation. Mostly, in the past I have relied on interactive video installations.
Now I use also DIY laser projectors, microcontrollers and programmable LEDS. Which makes the installations more physical, relatable and autonomous.
I create my works with an open source software called “puredata”. it ensures the durability and stability of the pieces since there aren’t restrictive licenses or planned obsolescence involved. I’m quite eclectic but my styles are abstract and experimental. In the past I have done pieces that criticised how emerging technologies might impact our lives. (AI, etc..)
My current topic of exploration is to illustrate how neurodiverse individuals perceive and interact with the world in a different way. The Neurodiverse multiverse is an interactive audiovisual installation and a combination of interactive video projection, a sculpture made with color leds and sound.
My motivation to improve on this art is to give visibility to Neurotypical people, practices and struggles. Using mediums that are already “challenging” I try to make other people see that there is also beauty and depth beyond what it is in our comfort zone.

Servando Barreiro’s background is in Electronics, Sound and Audiovisual communication. He started his artistic career early on by showing a video performance in the Reina Sofía contemporary art museum in Madrid.
From that point on, he kept self-educating himself about the subjects of Art+ science+ technology. Back then, he was lucky enough to be around Medialab Madrid, precisely when they started teaching and organizing lectures about media / technology / electronic art. A couple of years later, after he
moved to Berlín, he started to do Artist in residencies until the point that he gave up his fix residence in Berlin.
Servando speaks many languages and has been living all over the world such as Perú, Stockholm, México and California.
