Jana De Troyer ist die dritte subnetAIR in diesem Jahr. Am 4. Oktober stellt sie ihr Projekt „||: Focus – Distraction :||“ beim „Meet the artist“ Event im Center for HCI vor.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Die Komponistin und Performerin Jana De Troyer lotet die dynamischen Grenzen zwischen Stilen und Disziplinen aus und wechselt dabei geschickt ihre Rollen als Komponistin, freie Improvisatorin, Instrumentalistin, Mensch, Klangkünstlerin und Programmiererin. Neben ihrer Tätigkeit als zeitgenößische Saxophonistin hat Jana ein starkes Interesse daran verschiedene Ausdrucksformen zu erkunden und diese zu vereinen. Diese Experimentierfreude führt zu einer Vielzahl kreativer Kollaborationen mit Komponist:innen, Musiker:innen und Künstler:innen aus anderen Disziplinen wie der bildenden Kunst, dem Tanz und des Programmierens.
Ihr eigenes Schaffen umfasst sowohl Instrumental- als auch elektronische Musik sowie interaktive Installationen, Netzkunst und audiovisuelle Werke. Sie hat u.a. Musik für ein strickendes Gitarrenquartett (Fashionista’s), Küssende (DU-O), eine:n Fensterputzer:in und Electronics (Putzzwang), Tiktok-liebende Improvisatoren (FMO_1), und meditierende Zuschauer:innen und Kaktus (Intimate Space Study 1a) entwickelt. Im Zentrum ihrer Arbeit steht eine intensive klangliche Auseinandersetzung mit außermusikalischen Konzepten, die häufig zur Integration interdisziplinärer Mittel führt.

In was wollen wir unsere Zeit investieren? In die Arbeit? Lesen? Menschlichen Kontakt?
Wie präsent sind wir eigentlich noch dabei?
Unsere Aufmerksamkeit ist zu einem unserer wertvollsten Güter geworden. Nicht nur für uns selbst, sondern auch als Währung für die Marketing-Maschine. Unsere Aufmerksamkeitsspanne ist kürzer geworden als die eines Goldfisches, und die Unternehmen versuchen herauszufinden, wie sie so viel unserer Aufmerksamkeit wie möglich auf ihre Produkte lenken können. Wir wissen, dass unser digitales Verhalten verfolgt, unsere Klicks gespeichert und unsere Zeit gekidnappt wird. Was wäre, wenn man einen Schritt weiter ginge und physische Daten sammeln würde, um den Algorithmus zu füttern — würde das zu weit gehen?
Während der subnet Residency wird sich Jana De Troyer mit der Veränderung von Aufmerksamkeitsspannen, Privatsphäre und Marketingmechanismen beschäftigen. Wo liegen die Grenzen der Datenverfolgung? Wie geht ein:e Künstler:in mit dem immer kürzer werdenden Fokus seiner Zuschauer:innen um? Und vor allem: Sitzen Menschen und Goldfische im selben… ähm Goldfischglas?

Jana De Troyer is the third subnetAIR this year. On October 4, she will present her project „||: Focus – Distraction :||“ at the „Meet the artist“ event at the Center for HCI.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Composer and performer Jana De Troyer explores the dynamic boundaries between styles and disciplines, deftly alternating her roles as composer, free improviser, instrumentalist, human being, sound artist and programmer. In addition to being a contemporary saxophonist, Jana has a strong interest in exploring different forms of expression and uniting them. This joy of experimentation leads to a variety of creative collaborations with composers, musicians and artists from other disciplines such as visual arts, dance and programming.
Her own work includes both instrumental and electronic music as well as interactive installations, net art and audiovisual works. She has developed music for a knitting guitar quartet (Fashionista’s), kissers (DU-O), a:n window cleaner:in and electronics (Putzzwang), Tiktok-loving improvisers (FMO_1), and meditating spectators:in and cactus (Intimate Space Study 1a), among others. At the heart of their work is an intense sonic engagement with extra-musical concepts, often leading to the integration of interdisciplinary means.

What do we want to invest our time in? In work? Reading? Human contact?
How present are we actually still in the process?
Our attention has become one of our most valuable assets. Not only for ourselves, but also as currency for the marketing machine. Our attention span has become shorter than that of a goldfish, and companies are trying to figure out how to get as much of our attention as possible on their products. We know that our digital behavior is being tracked, our clicks are being saved, and our time is being hijacked. What if they went a step further and collected physical data to feed the algorithm – would that be going too far?
During the subnet residency, Jana De Troyer will explore changing attention spans, privacy, and marketing mechanisms. What are the limits of data tracking? How does an artist deal with the ever-shortening focus of his audience? And above all: are humans and goldfish sitting in the same… um, goldfish bowl?
