Die Auswahl der Subnet AIRs 2016 versucht die bisherige Schiene objektbasierter Medienkunst, künstlerischer Forschung und der DIY/Makerszene weiterzuführen. Wichtig war der Jury auch dieses Mal eine Mischung aus Nachwuchs und etablierten Positionen sowie die Vernetzung von subnet mit internationalen KünstlerInnen und Kunsträumen. Daher spricht die Jury mit Blick auf aktives Forschen am Material und Stärkung des Netzwerks folgende Empfehlung aus:
Laura Splan (USA)
Bei dem von Laura Splan vorgeschlagenem Projekt gefiel der Jury die spannende Mischung aus transdiziplinärer künstlerischer Forschung, die Daten von Biosensoren auf visuelle und haptische Objekte überträgt. Wir freuen uns auf eine Künstlerin, die Ästhetik, Handwerk und Wissenschaft auf progressive Art und Weise vereinen kann.
Kanari Shirao (JP)
Kanari Shirao verbindet in seinem Proposal Klangkunst, Elektrotechnik, Materialforschung und Programmierung zu einer objekthafthaften Klanginstallation mit poetischem Charakter. Er versucht einen toten Baum, analog zum Bau eines Instruments, durch Aushöhlung und elektrische Modifikation, in eine Soundinstallation zu verwandeln, welche ihr klingendes Inneres aber nur durch das aktive Zuhören erahnen lässt. Sein bisheriges Schaffen und die dadurch erahnbaren Kompetenzen in den Bereichen Klangkunst, Elektrotechnik und Programmierung zeigen eine gute Überschneidung mit der inhaltlichen Ausrichtung des subnet Residency Programms.
Robert B. Lisek (PL)
Mit dem Künstler und Mathematiker Robert B. Lisek lädt subnetAIR 2016 einen Medienkünstler nach Salzburg, der konsequent und kritisch Technologie und Gesellschaft hinterfragt. Der Zufall ist ein in digitalen Systemen schwer synthetisierbares Element. “Deciphering Randomness” setzt sich mit Geneseprozessen von Zufall auseinander und erforscht seine Relevanz in sozialen, künstlerischen, biologischen sowie digitalen Kontexten.

The subnet Artist in Residence Programme will continue to accumulate and connect competences and positions from the fields of object based media art, artistic research and the DIY/Makerscene and bring those to Salzburg. This is why the jury – with an interest in active research in materials, promotion of the local maker and artist network and also to gain international reach – recommends the following residents:
Laura Splan (USA)
Laura Splans proposal was chosen because of an interesting mix of transdisciplinar and artistic research, which transfers data of bio-sensors to visual and haptic objects. We are looking forward to meeting an artist who combines aesthetics, handcraft and science in a progressive way.
Kanari Shirao (JP)
Kanari Shirao combines sound art, electrical engineering, material research and programming. He transfmors it to an object based sound installation with poetic character. In his proposal he tries to turn a dead tree into a sound installation. By hollowing it out and through electrical modification – analogue to the construction of an instrument – its sonorous inside can be perceived if listening very closely. In his accomplishments and current projects Kanari Shiraos shows imaginable competences in the fields of sound art, electrical engineering and programming. His focus points out an appropriate overlap with the content alignment of the subnetAIR residency programme.
Robert B. Lisek (PL)
The artist and mathematician Robert B. Lisek critically and consistently examines technology and society.
In digital systems a coincidence is a hardly synthesizable element. The proposal “Deciphering Randomness” deals with the genesis and ways of coincidence. Robert B. Lisek wants to explore its relevance in social, artistic, biological and digital contexts.
