Anna Dumitriu is an award-winning, internationally recognised British artist who works with bio-art, sculpture, installation and digital media to explore our relationship with infectious disease, synthetic biology and robotics. She has an extensive international exhibition profile including the Nobel Prize Museum, ZKM, Ars Electronica, BOZAR, Picasso Museum, Künstlerhaus Vienna, MIT Museum, Liljevalchs, MOCA Taipei, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, HeK Basel, LABoral, Art Laboratory Berlin, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, 6th Guangzhou Triennale and History of Science Museum Oxford. Her works are represented in several important collections, including ZKM, Science Museum London and Eden Project.
About the exhibition and the Artist in Residence at the Helmholtz Centre:
In February 2020, the Institute of Epigenetics and Stem Cells (IES) appointed Anna Dumitriu as the first Artist in Residence at the Helmholtz Zentrum München in Germany. Dumitriu’s project entitled ‘The Mutability of Memories and Fates’ deals with the concept of cellular memory and cellular fates, investigating how cells package DNA and what effects this has. The work focuses on the variability of the cell, what controls its constancy and how this affects gene expression and the nature of life. It explores the desirability of a deeper understanding of cell biology and the significant impact this will have on healthcare and disease prevention. The finished artworks are the result of intensive discussions with researchers and shared poetic and philosophical reflections on research. The residency was coordinated by Professor Maria Elena Torres-Padilla (Director of the IES), Amelie J. Kraus (Scientific Coordinator of the Epigenetics@HMGU community) and curated by Dr Claudia Schnugg.
